DELHI WAVERIDERS continued their unbeaten run in the inaugural Hockey India League as they thrashed Jaypee Punjab Warriors 3-0 in a round-robin match thereby ensuring a place in the last four of the cash-rich championship. This is the first match in the league where DELHI WAVERIDERS didn’t concede even a goal.
The DELHI WAVERIDERS scored through Akashdeep Singh at 14th minutes, Kiwi Andrew Hayward 52nd minutes and Simon Child 69th minutes to consolidate their position at the top of the league standings with 32 points from seven matches.
The match started on a fast note with Punjab Warriors trying its best to outfit its opponents, covering the early exchanges before the DELHI WAVERIDERS started the catch up game successfully.
After warming up the game for the first 10 minutes, the DELHI WAVERIDERS took the initiative and earned their first penalty corner in the 12th minute following this the DELHI WAVERIDERS surged ahead two minutes later when Akashdeep scored with a stunning reverse hit dodging couple of Punjab defenders inside the circle. The Warriors got a golden opportunity to equalize in the 23rd minute but an unmarked S V Sunil shot wide after he was fed from the right flank by a beautiful one-two from Jamie Dwyer and Robert Hammond and the close drive went in vein.
The opportunistic DELHI WAVERIDERS compounded Punjab`s problems soon and took a 2-0 lead when Hayward converted the hosts` second penalty corner in the 52nd minute to score his first goal in his maiden outing in the tournament.
Thereafter, the DELHI WAVERIDERS controlled the game as the Warriors found it difficult to snatch the ball away from the possession of the home team.
In a desperate attempt to take hold of the game, Punjab warrior goalie entered the game leaving the goal un-guarded, Simon Child took the opportunity and scored the third goal for the DELHI WAVERIDERS pushing the ball in an open goal in the final minute of the match to add to Punjab`s agony to complete the rout.
The win has consolidated the DELHI WAVERIDERS lead at the top, taking their points tally to 32 from seven matches. The DELHI WAVERIDERS will play Ranchi Rhinos at Major Dhyanchand Stadium Delhi today.
