Future Plans Of Hockey India League: Targeting 8 Teams In HIL 2016

In future, the Hockey India League is planning to expand the franchise teams to 10. They are targeting for 8 teams in 2016 and 10 teams by the year 2018. There is a high possibility that a franchise team from South India will also participate.

A breakthrough bilateral agreement took place between Hockey India and Hockey Australia recently where Hockey Australia will be releasing its men’s national squad athletes in the senior category for participating in HIL for the upcoming three seasons starting from 2016. In return, Hockey India will get the scope of touring in Australia for the forthcoming three years and will get the chance to learn from their Australian counterparts. This agreement will make Indian hockey team face the Kookaburras, the Commonwealth and World champions, where a 6-match test tournament will take place from 2016 to 2018 in Australia.

The Indian hockey players will get highly benefitted with this endeavor of HIL. They will get a scope of interacting with the world players in a more substantial and comprehensive manner that will ultimately aid them to learn and gain additional knowledge from these hockey stalwarts.

The Hero Hockey India League, since its inception in 2013, has been successful in making field hockey players from across the globe come together and play in India. This endeavor has helped the game of hockey reach a new level in India altogether. This tournament is sanctioned by International Hockey Federation and sponsored by Hero MotoCorp, the two-wheeler automobile manufacturer. In 2013 the tournament started with 5 teams whereas in 2014 one more team was added. The present franchise-based squad consists of the Delhi Waveriders, Dabang Mumbai, Kalinga Lancers, Uttar Pradesh Wizards, Jaypee Punjab Warriors and Ranchi Rays.
